Lap Band Surgery Is Expensive But Worth It

August 25th, 2008

One of the questions everyone considering lap band surgery wants to know is, how much does it cost? While it’s impossible to give you a specific number, you can spend up to $30,000 in the U.S. for the surgery and related costs. The starting cost is around $15,000. So, yes it’s expensive. (Unless you’re very rich)

After the surgery and dramatic weight loss, you will have a much thinner body (priceless), better health (priceless), higher self esteem (priceless), and you’ll probably add several years to your life.

However because of the costs, many obese people who want to have the lap band surgery, can’t afford it. Usually medical insurance doesn’t cover the costs, so it’s all out of pocket.

One option is traveling to another country to have the surgery. Some people would be terrified of just the idea of a foreign doctor in a foreign hospital and imagine a botched job. But as long as you choose a qualified and skilled surgeon, this method can save you several thousands of dollars while giving you superb medical care. America has the highest medical costs in the world so it’s not unreasonable to consider this option. There are talented and skilled surgeons all over the world, not just America.

If you are really serious about having lap band surgery, schedule a consultation with a doctor who performs the surgery. It’s a serious financial situation, because to most people, $30,000 is a lot of money. But if you are obese and have tried and failed at losing weight, then this surgery may be able to turn your life around.

What is Lap Band Surgery?

July 23rd, 2008

Lap band surgery has been increasing in popularity over the last several years. It was first approved by the FDA in 2001. While millions of Americans struggle with obesity, the lap band surgery can help.

The good thing about lap band surgery is it is minimally invasive, reversible and adjustable. A Lap Band is a silicone belt that goes around the top of the stomach. The Lap Band is placed around the top of your stomach and secured in place with sutures. The surgery only takes about an hour and you may need to stay in the hospital overnight or you may go home the same day. It forces you to feel full much sooner than you normally would, forcing you to eat less.

A lap band operation is only for people who are obese, not those who are just overweight. Your Body Mass Index (BMI) will be considered to see if you qualify for surgery. Most people lose 50-60% of their excess fat within 2 years of the surgery. That’s a huge difference. The patient will look and feel like a completely different person. However, you must be aware that significant weight loss results in excess skin that will hang off your body and you will require another surgery to remove the excess skin.

Understanding Tummy Tucks

July 23rd, 2008

A flat and nice looking abdomen is something everyone wants. Sometimes diet and exercise just can’t give us the results we’d like. Even people who are not overweight can develop loose and sagging skin on their abdomen. This can be caused by pregnancy, C-sections, weight loss, heredity, and aging.

The medical term for tummy tucks is abdominoplasty. It removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen. It also restores weak muscles. The procedure results in an abdomen that is smooth and firm.

Tummy tucks are performed under anesthesia that can be either regional or general. With regional anesthesia, you are awake, but with general, you are unconscious. It starts with an incision across the abdomen from hip to hip bone. Then a second incision which is circular is made to separate the navel from surrounding abdominal skin. This exposes the muscle fascia which is tightened with sutures. Excess skin is removed. The remaining skin is put over the incision and put into place. The belly button is not affected during tummy tucks. It stays in place and the skin is re-draped around it.

Abdominoplasty is a major surgery. If you have had any C-sections in the past, the recovery will be similar so you have an idea of what to expect. You will need to plan to take time off work and a few weeks before you can resume normal activities. You must rest, take it easy, not over do it, and follow your doctors orders to ensure a smooth recovery.

After surgery, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and pain which will last a few days. Pain medication can be given to control post-op pain. Mild permanent scarring can be expected, but they are small and hard to spot. Even a bikini can cover up the scar. It’s nothing to worry about.

Even though tummy tuck results are permanent, you must take care of yourself or the results can be replaced by weight gain and new loose skin. While a tummy tuck will help your looks substantially, it’s not a substitute for diet and exercise. After the operation, you need to watch what you eat and exercise.

A decision to have a tummy tuck seems easy and obvious for a lot of people who want to look better, but the decision should be made carefully. If you want a tummy tuck, you need to understand the risks as well as the benefits. You should also have realistic expectations and not expect a surgery to turn you into some perfect human Barbie doll. This is a personal decision that you should make for yourself and feel comfortable with.

Removing Excess Skin

July 15th, 2008

When an overweight person loses a lot of weight, they expect a better, thinner body. They may lose a lot of fat, but they weren’t expecting to gain a lot of loose skin.

Many obese people who have dropped a lot of weight didn’t know what would happen. They didn’t expect to have a worse body than when they were overweight.

I’m not talking about someone losing say, 10 pounds. I’m talking serious weight loss, like 50 or 100 or more pounds. When someone gains a lot of weight, their skin grows out to accommodate their growing body and extra fat.

When the fat is burned off, the fat goes away, but the loose skin is left behind. Without all that excess fat to hold the skin in place, it just hangs down and sags.

This is embarrassing for the person with excess skin and even physically uncomfortable and sometimes physically painful. For example if someone with lots of loose skin wants to go on a jog or run, all that loose skin is moving around and it’s painful.

The only way to remove excess skin is through surgery. A lot of people who have excess skin don’t have the surgery simply because of the cost. Insurance doesn’t cover this surgery unfortunately.

For anyone lucky enough to afford the surgery, the results are amazing. The ugly, excess skin is surgically removed from the body, leaving a much more fit, more attractive body instead. Now you can actually see the body that was UNDER all that loose skin. Even stretch marks can be removed because skin that has stretch marks is removed during surgery, leaving behind the better skin.

From Saggy and Fat to Beautiful Tummy

July 12th, 2008

Pregnancies, C-sections and weight gain can wreck havock on your stomach and leave a saggy, giant fat roll and stretch marked covered skin. This results in low esteem and embarrassment.  You don’t wear bathing suits even if you love to swim and you hide your body. You may feel depressed and like you have to be stuck with that body forever. But you don’t.

The answer is a tummy tuck. This picture shows how a tummy tuck can take a saggy, fat stomach and turn it flat and attractive. It’s a huge difference. It’s hard to believe the before and after pictures are of the same person. It’s just amazing what surgery and skilled surgeons can accomplish.

Now the person who had a tummy tuck no longer has to feel embarrassed of their body and try to hide it. They can wear that bathing suit and go swimming. I bet their self esteem has improved so much.

Tummy Tucks Get Rid Of Saggy Stomachs

July 11th, 2008

For people who have been or who are overweight, getting rid of fat in the stomach area can be very hard or even impossible.

For any woman who has been pregnant, especially those who have had several pregnancies and c-sections, it’s very frustrating to have a seemingly permanent roll of fat there.

The best candidates for liposuction are those who have skin with good elasticity and don’t have stretch marks. However, if you have had several pregnancies and C-sections, you may have loose, saggy skin with stretch marks on your abdomen.

The answer for that problem is a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck can give you that stomach you’re not embarrassed of. It can remove that saggy, flabby skin and leave you with a flat stomach instead.

The number one deterrent seems to be cost. Tummy tucks aren’t exactly cheap, especially if you are living paycheck to paycheck. The second deterrent is risk. Some people are terrified of surgeries and needles. Those who really want that flat stomach though, will still find a way to have the surgery. For fear of surgeries and needles, people are usually given anti anxiety medication before the surgery to calm them down.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

July 11th, 2008

One of the things people want to know about liposuction is how much does it cost? There isn’t one simple answer because the cost of liposuction varies.

Usually, the minimum fee for liposuction is around $2,000. But liposuction is just one of the costs you have to pay for. You also have to pay for the anesthesiologist and medications and usually there are other costs as well.

The cost of liposuction depends on several factors: The geographical location, the doctors, the hospital, the section of your body to be worked on, and how much fat is taken out.

Higher liposuction fees are around $8,000. If you want a more detailed answer on how much liposuction will cost for you, you should schedule a consultation with a plastic surgery practice. They will ask you questions and will be able to give you a more specific cost.

If you want liposuction done, considering the liposuction cost, anesthesiologist fees, any hospital or operating room costs, and medications, you should estimate you need at least around $5,000.

Most plastic surgery practices are willing to finance with their patients if the patients have good credit. So instead of paying all the money up front, you could make so many monthly payments until the balance is paid off.

For people who REALLY want liposuction, they don’t let the cost hinder them. They will save up and finance and find a way to get the surgery done.

Why Weight Loss Surgery?

July 6th, 2008

Weight loss surgery has become more and more popular in recent years and since we have the knowledge to perform weight loss surgery, it won’t go away unless weight problems went away. And that’s not going to happen.

Weight loss surgery is desired by many people who are over weight and have struggled with weight loss. People want weight loss surgery because they can go in with one body and come out with an improved body. It’s the quickest way to lose weight and surgery can also shape your body, which you can’t do with dieting and exercise.

Losing a lot of weight with diet and exercise can be extremely difficult and it can take a long time. That’s where weight loss surgery comes in. There is no hard battle that can last for years.

With liposuction, a doctor can remove pounds of excess fat in those places like the stomach and butt where it can be impossible to get rid of fat from the old fashioned way.

But after having surgery, you will have to watch what you eat and take care of yourself so you don’t end up putting all that fat back on.
